This is a summer scene because the lotus blooms in summertime. Translation of the writing is "Daughter on the Riverside" The clothing is type worn by a young girl in the country outside of the city. The sleeve of her dress is called a "water sleeve" because of the graceful swaying movement it gives when the wearer is walking. It was considered improper to show parts of the body so these sleeves provided both functions of cover and beauty. |
